SCC EXPO Competition Judging Results

Thanks to all who attended the EXPO print competition judging event on Wednesday November 7.

We have attached a complete list of winners for your convenience. List of Winning Entries For Website.pdf

Approximately 200 excellent photographs were submitted in 9 categories: Monochrome, Flora, Fauna, Landscape/Waterscape, Sports/Action, General, People, Architecture/Cityscape, and Photographic Art. Our excellent judges were David Mills, Paul Michael Kane and Doug Peterson.

Bob Kochenthal won 'Best In Show' with his landscape print, 'Van Campens Glen'.

All prints will be displayed November 17 (6 to 8 pm) and November 18 (1-4 pm) at the EXPO Exhibition at the Sparta Ambulance Building. Both events are open to the public.

Dave Mills Tips on Winning a Photo Competition

David Mills: Improving your images/photography for competitions. Sparta Camera Club April 25, 2018

Landscapes:

Identify and use a strong foreground element to bring the eye into the picture.
Use a leading line to draw the viewer into the scene.
The various elements in the picture should not overlap if possible.
Lighting should be warm—early or late in the day is best.
Minimize the sky if it is clear or has little of interest in it.
There should be no blown out or bright white areas in the picture.
Landscape versus portrait. Verticals are usually stronger images.
Look behind you when shooting. The scene might be behind you.
Use sidelight (rising or setting sun/moonlight) to emphasis shadows/shapes.
Assymetrical/rule of thirds rather than placing subject in the center.

Nature/animals/birds:

Backgrounds should be clean rather than cluttered. Muted or blurred if possible.
The head position of the bird should be angled toward the viewer.
The eye should be sharp and there should be a catchlight in it.
Leave room in front of the bird.
Be careful of white birds not to blow out portions of the bird. Easier to shoot in low light.
Birds standing in water—leave room for the rest of the leg and foot.
There should be good detail in both the lights and the darks of the bird.
Wing position should be up or down, not flat out.
Tell a story if possible or just do a portrait of the bird.

Botany/Macro

Warm lighting.
Use fill flash on water lilies—even works to underexpose and use fill flash.
Use maximum DOF.
Show part of the stem on the flower so it is attached to something.
Get into the flower.
Offset flower from center.

General

Picture should have impact—WOW factor.
Edges should be clean. No distracting items to lead the eye off of the page.
Keep the image simple.

Two New Sales Initiatives at EXPO XXXIII

Sparta Camera Club will have two new initiatives for our dues-paying members at EXPO XXXIII on November 18 and 19. In addition to displaying/selling all of the juried photos, we will allow the sale of your personal...

Matted inventory. These matted photographs must be placed in a typical folding print rack (canvas* or wood), and priced.
Photography equipment that you are no longer using, but in good operating condition. You can consider anything from complete camera/lens gear to accessories. Each item has to be visible (out-of-box unless brand new) with an affixed price tag.

Concerning both of the above initiatives, Sparta Camera Club will retain 20% of all sales.

*Members who might consider purchasing a new canvas folding print rack...this item is typically sold in three sizes. Consider the medium size if your mats are not much bigger than 16 x 20. The mini rack stands much lower to the floor, and therefore should be avoided.

It is required that each member complete a separate Inventory Form for each of the above initiatives. Please click on the links below to acquire forms. For those members who are accustomed to completing online forms, these forms allow keyboard data entry. Otherwise, you can print the forms and enter the data in ink. If your inventory requires additional forms, please fill out the text box information first, then save a copy to your desktop (name the file as you like). When you open the file on your desktop, you can begin entering the data as described. Only complete the information in the first 3 columns; the last 3 columns will be completed at point of sale.

"Clarke and Joy have a weekday workshop in Boonton this Wednesday

Using your own camera, in a local park, Hands on Photography Workshops will show you why your camera works the way it does. After a quick discussion at the Gallery, you’ll learn how to “see” over and under exposure in your shots, and how to adjust your Exposure Compensation to make them perfect.

After students master the Exposure Compensation adjustment, we go right into Aperture and Shutter Speed Modes. We show you how to decide which mode is most important for your subject, and how to apply the Exposure Mode on Your Own Camera, so you can remember how to do it on your own.

We'll be Shooting in Aperture Mode in a local park - learning to adjust the depth of Focus. Then we'll take a quick walk down to a VERY ANGRY river for some Shutter Mode practice to find that perfect shutter speed for moving water.

We end with another session in the gallery, editing on your laptop, Ipad, or other mobile device. You'll see how the adjustments you made affected your images, and we'll help you make them POP.

To celebrate Independence Day, the Miners will host an extra dazzling fireworks display following the July 4 home game . First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. All events will be held at Skylands Stadium, located at 94 Championship Place, Augusta.

July 7th and July 10th Franklin Pond

Fireworks will be part of the Franklin Carnival.

July 9th, Jefferson Township Day

In conjunction with the 30th annual Jefferson Township Day celebration, a huge aerial fireworks display will be presented by Interstate Fireworks Company on the fields at the Jefferson Township High School, 1010 Weldon Road, Oak Ridge, on Saturday, July 9.

The fireworks will begin at 9:30 pm following a two-hour concert featuring the Jefferson Township Community Concert and Jazz Bands under the direction of Peter Tummillo with soloist Nancy Koch at 7:30 p.m.

Free admission until 5:30 p.m. to the other activities on the fields of the high school, then only $3 per adult and $1 per child at all gates. Free parking all day and evening and handicap parking with decal. No alcohol, no drugs, no fireworks, no bicycles, no drones, no dogs/pets, and no large coolers allowed.

Bring a lawn chair or a blanket for comfortable seating under the stars.

SCC Annual Club Photo Book - Call for Submissions - DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 16, 2014

SCC ANNUAL PHOTO BOOK - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 16, 2014

Each year SCC publishes an annual club photo book. All members who submit a photo get a dedicated page within the book which displays their name, image, and optional caption information.

Please submit your image to Paul Kane no later than April 16, 2014.

Images should be sized to 8x10, portrait orientation, 300 dpi is a must, Adobe RGB 1998 colorspace, your name printed exactly how you want to see it displayed in the book, and an option caption to be printed below the photo. All images and captions should be family-friendly.

**Captions can be anything you wish such as description of the image or subject or the story behind the photo or the technical specifications of how you photographed it.

After the April 16th deadline, a link will be sent to a website with all submissions displayed for members to vote for the image they would like to see as the cover of the 2014 SCC Annual Photo Book. The image which receives the most votes will be our cover for this year!

If you have any questions or need assistance with any of these specifications, please let us know so we can try to assist. This is a wonderful SCC activity that the whole membership looks forward to each year!

Many thanks to everyone who submitted their images by the original deadline of today, March 31st. Your timely submissions are very much appreciated! We've decided to extended the deadline to April 16th in hopes that it will give more members a chance to submit images so we can make this the biggest and best SCC Annual Club book ever!! We have so many talented folks in the club and this is such a wonderful opportunity to showcase your work. Please get your images in by April 16th and please let us know if you have questions about getting your images sized, etc. correctly.

Sparta Camera Club Members at the Skylands Juried Art Exhibit

Sparta Camera Club is well represented at the current Sussex County Art and Heritage Council's 26th Annual Skylands Regional Juried Art Exhibit.

The Skylands exhibit has become a benchmark for quality art shows in the New Jersey highlands. All artists 18 years of age or older are invited to submit entries, and all media are accepted. This year 74 works of art were selected from over 200 entries by artists in the tri-state area and beyond and cash prizes totaling $3,000 were awarded. This year Lydia Viscardi, an art educator, gallery curator, and mixed media artist whose award-winning work is frequently on exhibition, was chosen to be the juror.

Eleven members of the Sparta Camera Club had 18 photographs selected for the exhibit. Three of the twelve awards presented in the exhibit were given to members of SCC.

SCC Annual Book Cover Winner Announced

In April voting took place for the 2013 SCC Annual book cover photograph. We had 43 votes spread across 69 images. At the April 24th club meeting the winning image was announced. And the winning image is….."After an Autumn Rain" by Retta Cheung. Retta took home 7 total votes to win the cover.

The book weighs in at 76 pages, will be perfect bound and have a cover price of $20.00. Book orders were taken by Paul Michael Kane and books will be distributed at the Business Meeting in June.

SCC's Paul Michael Kane Published in Popular Magazine

On May 1, 2013 the popular magazine Weird NJ released issue #40. In the magazine is a 4 page centerfold feature written by Sparta Camera Club's own Paul Michael Kane titled "Hollywood's History in Ogdensburg: Fox Film Vaults". The article includes 10 photographs of the Fox Film Vaults taken by Paul specifically for this article.

Weird NJ Magazine is on the news stands now. Please pick up a copy at your local news stand or bookseller.

Congratulations to the Sparta Camera Club Members who earned ribbons at the St. Catherine of Bologna 14th Annual Photography, Art and Poetry Exhibit.

Two club members make it into Weird N.J. Magazine!

During the early days of September, Weird N.J. ran a cover photo contest for their upcoming issue - the first time they've ever done as such. Dozens of entries were available to view and comment on over at the Facebook Site of the magazine. After revealing their choice of covers, the publishers decided to print some runners up in the issue - including two members of the club! Mark Miller and Paul Michael Kane's work appears on Page 5 of the new issue - which will be available October 1st on news stands everywhere!
