THE MANHATTANHENGE TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED COMPLETELY FOR 2013 DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS.

Manhattanhenge – sometimes referred to as the Manhattan Solstice – is a circumstance which occurs twice a year, during which the setting sun aligns with the east–west streets of the main street grid in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Derived from Stonehenge, where the sun aligns with the stones on the solstices with a similarly dramatic effect.

During Manhattanhenge, an observer on one of the gridded east-west streets will see the sun setting over New Jersey directly opposite, from the street, along its centerline.

The 1st occurrence of Manhattanhenge occurred on May 28th and May 29th of this year.  The next occurrence for 2013 will be on July 12th, when you will be able to see the full sun over the horizon as it sets aligned between the east/west streets of Manhattan, and on July 13th which will be when the half sun is visible over the horizon line when it sets aligned between the east/west streets.
More detailed information about this phenomenon can be found at the Museum of Natural History site:  http://www.amnh.org/our-research/hayden-planetarium/resources/manhattanhenge

One of the best places to go is the Tudor City bridge on the upper east side of Manhattan on 42nd Street.  Sunset that day is at 8:24 p.m.
Let's meet up at Macy's parking lot at Rockaway Mall (across from Michael's) at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 12th and take a trip to Manhattan to photograph this beautiful scene as day becomes night in Manhattan.  We can arrange ride sharing when we arrive at Macy's that afternoon and then head into Manhattan.

We'll drive in to Manhattan and park at the Port Authority Parking Garage on 42nd Street and then take the walk over to the East Side and find a good spot near Tudor City. Grand Central Terminal and it's bridge are also located not far from Tudor City on 42nd Street.  It is also where the Chrysler Building is located so it is a great street with a clear view towards NJ to the West for capturing the setting sun.
If we experience inclement weather on Friday, July 12th, please check this event page for a status update.  We will update the event by noon that day with postponement arranagements.  RAIN DATE will be Saturday, July 13th.
In the event that the weather is inclement on Saturday, July 13th, the trip will be cancelled and the website will be updated by noon on July 13th with that information.
Please register here in order for us to have a list of who will be joining us.  There is no cost for the event and SCC will not be collecting any fees.  However, you may wish to share transportation expenses (including parking at the Port Authority Garage - approximately $28.00 per vehicle) with other club members or bring money for any incidentals such as food, drink, etc that you wish to purchase.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please send email to info@spartacameraclub.org.

Look forward to seeing you on July 12th (or on our rain date:  July 13th)!!
